Trade agreements in Geoplanetical let you negotiate tariff reductions for selected products rather than treating trade as one universal switch. Begin in the partner's trade dossier and compose an offer. The important details are each side's concessions, their phase-in period and the approval steps that turn a proposal into an agreement.
Compose a product-by-product offer
Open a partner's trade dossier and start a negotiation. Choose Compose the offer, then Choose products to decide which goods belong in the proposal.
Set the import-duty reduction for each product on each side. The official trade negotiation instructions emphasize a useful distinction: a 50% reduction halves the existing duty. It does not set the final tariff to 50%.
Set the number of years over which the reductions take effect. An offer with a transition period should not be read as an immediate move to its eventual final rates.
Review the effects and the counteroffer
Compare the proposal's effects for exporters, domestic importers and customs revenue. Those perspectives can differ, so read all three before deciding the offer suits your plans.
Submit the offer and inspect any counteroffers. Continue through ratification and signing rather than assuming the first submitted proposal has already entered into force.
The official instructions describe the negotiation workflow, not a guaranteed combination of products or concessions every partner will accept. Review the response your actual proposal receives.
Keep agreements separate from extra duties
The general import tariff is under Budget → Revenue & taxes → Customs duties. A customs union may control that rate instead of your government.
Targeted additional duties are handled separately under Diplomacy → Agreements → Measures. Those measures can affect covered agreements, require trade-bloc approval and trigger disputes. They are different controls from offering mutual tariff reductions to a negotiating partner.
Check the relevant agreement and trade rules before assuming an additional duty is just an edit to your negotiated offer.
Leave an agreement through its own procedure
For an active agreement, open Diplomacy → Agreements and choose Withdraw from the agreement when available. Confirm the notice and follow the effective date.
The official gameplay FAQ says withdrawal takes effect after six months; the agreement continues during that notice period and leaving damages relations. If your trade bloc controls the agreement, the wiki requires Submit to vote and collective approval before withdrawal.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 50% reduction mean a 50% tariff?
No. It halves the duty that already applies. The reduction and the resulting tariff are different quantities.
Can I choose different goods for each side?
The official process lets you choose products and set each side's import-duty reduction per product. Review the actual proposal before submitting it.
Is submitting an offer enough to activate it?
No. Review counteroffers and finish the agreement's ratification and signing stages.
